“What kind of a father is this guy?” Sam demanded as he backed the truck out of the driveway. “His daughter is missing for almost a week and he can’t even be bothered to come to the airport to pick her up?”

“I only met him a couple of times, but he struck me as being pretty cold.” Nikki glanced one more time at the elegant brick facade of the house. Addie had turned to wave goodbye to them before letting herself into the house only moments before.

“Cold?” Sam put the truck in gear with more force than was strictly necessary. He stepped on the gas. “That’s got to be putting it mildly. Did you see her face when she told us that he didn’t like driving in traffic? Is there something wrong with taxis? Hell, the guy could have hired a limo. You can’t tell me he can’t afford it,” he said, gesturing sharply to the expensive homes around them.

“He can afford it,” Nikki agreed. “But from what Addie has told me, I don’t think he spends much money except on his work. Archaeology doesn’t come cheap.”

“Neither do children,” Sam snapped. “I can’t even imagine how it feels to have a father like that.”

“No, I don’t suppose you can.” Nikki reached out and patted his leg. “Not everyone comes from a family like yours, where everyone not only loves everyone else, they actually like each other.”

“I know that.” Sam caught her hand in his, squeezing it for a moment before releasing her. He knew Nikki’s own family was far from the Brady Bunch image of perfection. But Ronald Smith’s lack of concern over his daughter was something else again.

“I still say the guy’s a jerk,” he muttered, flipping on his turn signal.

“I agree. But Addie loves him. Or she thinks she does.” Nikki frowned out the windshield, her expression thoughtful. “When we were in school, there was nothing she wanted more than his approval.”

“Did she ever get it?”

“I don’t know. I don’t think it would have occurred to him to tell her if she had.” Sam’s response was a low, rumbling noise that sounded suspiciously like a growl. Nikki ignored him. She thought about the obvious intimacy between Cole and Addie. “She’s spent so many years trying to get him to love her, I wonder if another man could ever compete.”
